Thailand’s economic growth has slowed down in recent years, with GDP growing by 3.2% y/y in 2016. Since 2010, Thai consumers have become increasingly leveraged with the household debt-to-GDP ratio reaching 79.9% by 2016. The challenging economic environment has led to rising NPL ratios in Thai banks, with gross NPLs going up to 2.8% of the total loans in 2016. Nevertheless, Thai banks have generally been prudent in their capital adequacy and liquidity management.

The Tier I capital ratio was 14.1% and the liquidity coverage ratio was 173.2% in 2016, well in excess of regulatory minima. Thai banks generally focused on improving their operational efficiency in 2016, resulting in increased profitability despite increasing allocations for loan losses and falling net interest margins.
