The global microbial pesticides market value is expected to reach USD 720.88 million by 2021 from USD XX million in 2015, witnessing a double digit market growth during the forecasted period. Microbial pesticides are the microbe based biopesticides, which are used to protect plants from various pests. Multiple acquisitions, licensing agreements, partnerships and investments of hundreds of millions dollars in research and development by large companies show that the segment will drive the growth of crop protection market in coming decade.

While the prevalence of chemical or synthetic pesticides in crop protection would continue, human, animal and environmental health concerns would play key roles in driving growth for Biopesticides. Several countries are adopting a stringent approach concerning the amount of imports, with a special focus on regulating the quantity of pesticide residues. As a result, use and demand of non-chemical treatments for crop protection is increasing. Other factors favouring the market growth includes low toxicity of microbial pesticides on non-target pest species, compatibility with synthetic chemicals and no residual toxicity for human and other animals. In spite of their low toxicity and environment impact levels, microbial pesticides have a major restrain in the form of high costs and low availability.

Based on product type the market is segmented into bacteria based pesticides, fungi based pesticides, virus based pesticides and nematode based pesticides. Bacteria based microbial pesticides dominates the market with nearly 75% of the total market share. Among bacteria based pesticides B. thuringiensis var. israelensis is the most commonly used bacteria. Fungi based microbial pesticides forms the largest market segment after bacteria. Trichoderma sp. is the most commonly used fungi for preparation of microbial pesticides. Most of the products available in the market are insect control products. Further market is segmented by crop type market into fruits and vegetables, maize, rice, cotton and others. Fruits and vegetables accounts for the highest market share of 56% followed by cotton (XX %), rice (XX %) and maize (XX %).

By region, Asia-Pacific is the largest microbial pesticides market, however, by country USA is the largest market by revenue. China, Japan, Brazil and India are the major markets driving the industry growth. On one hand where synthetic crop protection has been dominated by less than ten massive companies, microbial pesticides developers and manufacturer number in the hundreds. Top ten companies combined forms 25% of the market, and over 50 companies just 60% of the total market share. The market structure is quite different than that of synthetic crop protection products’ market and most players need to develop strategies keeping large number of small-scale developer in mind.
