Germany has plan to increase the electric vehicle production to 1 million units by the end of 2020. The government of the country has aided some 500 million euros in the research for these vehicle from 2012. The country has focused on providing battery electric vehicles and using eco-friendly transport, resulting in increased demand for EHPV. Electrification has promise as an energy strategy in the country, but to achieve success, it requires the Grid Enabled Vehicles (GEV) to be integrated into the grid. Germany plans to develop a smart grid network in conjunction with its Scandinavian and southern European neighbors. Research efforts are also under way in 16 municipalities to test the use of smart meters, which allow the utility to monitor individual electricity use and improve efficiency. The Environment Ministry has also insisted that the electricity used to charge the plug-in vehicles should come exclusively from renewable energy resources, such as solar and wind power. This as an initiative would further help decrease the overall German emissions.
Electric high performance vehicles can be differentiated from other EVs on aspects which include longer range of distance i.e. over 90 miles in single charge, which is very high compared to other commercially available EV. EHPVs also have high acceleration and can attain speed of over 90 miles per hour with fast 0 to 60 miles per hour acceleration unlike that of EV which can range at speeds varying from 40-65 miles per hour. Additionally, cost of fuel used for propulsion is also significantly lower (estimated to be less than one third) than a high performance ICE vehicles. With the advent and evolution of developments in electric vehicle mechanism in Germany, the market of a cost effective fuel efficient vehicle is expected to grow significantly. However high cost of ownership coupled with limitations in account of the charging infrastructure, economic concerns would affect the growth of the market in the forecast period.
During the forecast period, new EHPVs by Audi, Porsche, and Aston Martin are expected to be introduced into the German market. The market is segmented by electric vehicle type and by power range. Some of the key players in this market are BMW, Daimler, and Nissan Motor. Germany's car companies have scrambled to catch up to their competitors in electric technology but with the aim of making Germany a market leader for electric mobility, there is a huge prospect for an influential growth in the HPEV market during the forecast period.
