Liquid hydrogen is produced by using a hydrogen compressor.

Hydrogen compressors are used in areas where hydrogen is required in industrial scale. With the increasing hydrogen use the need for hydrogen has increased. To transport hydrogen, it has to be kept in high pressure and for this purpose hydrogen compressor is required. So apart from transportation and storage of hydrogen at filling stations, oil refinery, utility industry, chemical industry and electron industry make use of hydrogen compressors.

The market for hydrogen compressors is divided into several types. These can be single stage or multi stage based on the number of stages that are employed in the device. Also these come with either oil free or oil based versions. Hydrogen compressors can be segmented into several types based on the technologies used. In the ionic liquid piston compressor, an ionic liquid piston is used in the place of a metal piston in a piston-metal diaphragm compressor. The electrochemical hydrogen compressor, is a compact and robust design with no moving parts. It has membrane-electrode-assemblies (MEAs) which are similar to the ones used in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. High pressure beyond 10,000 psi can be achieved in this type of compressor. Hydride compressor uses a bed of hydride that absorbs hydrogen at normal temperature and releases later at high pressure. Piston-metal diaphragm compressor is a compressor that involves four stages. During this process the compressor needs to be cooled by water as it releases heat. Envoluted trochoid geometry technique is used in guided rotor compressor wher the parallel trochoid curve is used to compress hydrogen. Finally in single piston liner compressor uses dynamic counter balancing technique where by a mass is attached to the auxiliary springs which is connected to the compressor.

Hydrogen compression is required in several industries. Be it electron, chemical or petro refinery. However for the transportation and storage of hydrogen compressors are widely used. For fuel cell vehicles that need to carry hydrogen the compressor is essential. As the future looks for less polluting fuels, hydrogen vehicles lead the market in it. However these compressors are heavy and occupy a lot of space as compared to other compressors.
