Gas turbines have driven the aerospace industry since its inception and later have emerged as a strong force in the power generation market. Though initially patented for use in the power plants, these turbines were extensively employed in the aerospace industry and introduced to the power industry only after the World War II. These turbines faced resistance in the power industry primarily due to their huge size and low efficiency until the deployment of computer-aided design and advanced materials for manufacturing in the 1980's. The advent of this technology led to the manufacturing of 5-25 MW range turbines for producing power in simple cycle and later scaled up to 50-100 MW to cater to the production of base load power. This brought down manufacturing cost and increased maintenance requirement for efficient plant operation.

Factors like aging fleet of gas turbines, stringent government regulations on emission control, reduction of life cycle costs and the need to improve reliability, durability, and profitability along with an increase in operational performance are driving the gas turbine MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) market. On the other hand, factors such as lack of retention of skilled labor, the companies preferring in-house maintenance teams could act as a roadblock for the growth of the market.

Commercial aircraft sales and production volumes are expected to increase in growing economies like India and China due to a rising middle-class population with growing disposable income. Also, defense spending is on the rise with increasing socio-political tensions and military actions.
