Majority of the worlds energy requirements is fulfilled by thermal power. Thermal power stations operate on the principle of hot steam driving the turbines to generate electricity. The use of diverse fuel types to generate steam differentiates the thermal power stations. Of the various fuels viz. oil, gas, coal, and nuclear; majority of the fuel requirement by thermal power stations is met by coal. Coal is the most widely used fuel because of its availability around the world and low cost. Calorific value (CV) of coal determines the energy content of coal. Higher the CV more is the energy and price. Black coal or Bituminous coal contains higher CV than brown coal or lignite coal. Since the availability of brown coal is more and also the cost is lower, it is most widely used fuel in thermal power plants. This however presents a compounded problem associated with brown coal. The impurities contained in brown coal such as water, ash and others not only reduce the energy output but also produce harmful gases i.e. CO2 and SO2. This is known to cause severe health hazards.

Mixed fuel boilers address a persistent challenge of higher power output irrespective of the type and quality of coal. The availability of fuel type in a particular region cannot be changed. High quality coal provides optimum energy, less smoke but comes at a higher cost and restricted supply. On the other hand low quality coal with high ash content and other impurities is available in abundance. The benefit of this type of coal is low price but it has downside of lower energy output and higher discharge of pollutants. Improvement in even one percent efficiency of coal plant results in 2-3% reduction of harmful CO2 gas. Since 2004 Chinese government has closed power plants of 10000mw capacity, mostly having 200mw capacity. On the other hand it has actively promoted super critical power plants of 600mw to 1000mw capacity. Ultra supercritical and super critical power plants not only have better efficiency but have emission reductions of up to 40% than subcritical plants.

In 2015, Asia pacific region recorded the fastest growth in power generation and the engines of this growth have been India and China. It is estimated that by 2030 the demand for global thermal power generation is poised to increase by 62%. This drive will be directly pushing the demand for energy efficient advanced boilers, which includes super critical, ultra-super critical boilers and sub-critical boilers.

The need for a solution that is able to provide good amount of power at lower cost and with less pollution. Moreover government support for better solution has resulted in complementing the demand for newer technology based power solutions. The demand drivers for growth in power sector are, 1) Replacement of older boilers 2) Shortage and high price of black coal 3) Need for energy efficient boilers and 4) Demand of hydroelectric power

Operational Challenges, Environmental Concerns, Fluctuation in prices of raw materials, and Volatile Oil and Gas Markets are restraining the market from growth.

As per the data of United Nations Development Program (UNDP) all over the world there are 1.4 million people completely lack access to power and further 1 billion experience unreliable power supply. To increase the power output, while controlling the pollution super critical, power projects have been promoted by major power producing nations. The decision by Government of Germany to abolish the use of nuclear power and demands from rapidly developing China and India present significant demands for better technologies in coal based power sector. Moreover the direction of the power sector is towards non fossil fuel based technologies. So the future demand is going to be for solar and bio mass powered boilers.
