The market for global DC Drive is expected to be USD XX billion at the end of the year 2015 and by the end of 2022 it is estimated to reach USDXX billion. The market for DC drivers is expected to grow at a rate of XX%. DC current based motor is the first motor that was created even before ac motors. The speed of the DC motors is directly proportional to the voltage and inversely proportional to the current. So by controlling the voltage the DC driver regulates the torque of the DC Motor. Through this regulation it is able to synchronise the operations of the DC motor and the load. DC drives employ Pulse width modulation (PWM) technique to synchronise the torque and speed. In this process the voltage is regulated to match the PWM signal.

DC drives have been in use since decades. Oil and gas industry extensively uses DC motors and in the process DC drives. Other domains where Dc motor is required, its controlling DC drives have also been used. Crane and Trolley operations, belts and conveyers in industries, compressors and pumps have also been using it. For textile and paper industry where it is required to have synchronization of multiple machines so that to have continuous roll of paper of cloth produced, DC drives are favoured. These are also used in machine tools, industrial blowers and fans.

DC drives are favoured because these are much simple to use and require less maintenance. In terms of price as compared to complicated Ac drives these are less costly. However the market for DC drivers has been following a global trend towards a shift to AC drives. Although this product has survived for decades buy this has been a gradual shift that is being observed.

DC DRIVE consists of several parts. This includes, DC Motor, firing circuit, electrical control system, speed control system, and Rectifier Bridge. DC drives are of several types i.e. Non-regenerative DC Drives, Regenerative DC Drives, and Converter Types. Non-regenerative ones are widely used and able to control speed and torque in only one direction. Regenerative Dc drive can control both speed and torque in multiple directions. The rectifier offers full conversion capability and half-wave conversion capability.

The popularity of DC drives has increased due its use in electrical vehicles (EV). Since due to increased global concerns for eco-friendly travel has increased, it has resulted in greater demand for DC motors and in the process DC drives. Exceptional torque handling capacity of the DC drive is its another critical attribute. The starting and accelerating torque which may reach up to 400% can be provided by the DC drives. Also regeneration of overhauling loads can be performed with DC drives. Dc drives convert AC power into DC power. This current is non liner and this harmonic distortions can be damaging to the electrical motors well as other connected equipment.
