The market for global Scroll compressors is expected to be USD XX billion at the end of the year 2015 and by the end of 2022 it is estimated to reach USDXX billion. The market is expected to grow at a rate of XX%. Scroll compressors take its name from the presence of a spiral or scroll set. A scroll set comprises of two spiral elements. Out of these scrolls, one is fixed while the other is orbiting. Each of these scrolls are indexed with the other at an angle of 180 degrees. When the orbiting scroll starts moving, air gets trapped at the suction end and later it gets transferred to the discharge end. The entering air has to undergo about 2.5 turns to get out of the discharge end. These compressors are fully hermitic.

Scroll compressors are known for their excellent characteristics. These are used mostly in HVAC industry as refrigerants for both home and automobile industry. Due to their compact size and better efficiency, scroll compressors are used in cooling of mainframe computers as well as drinking water treatment plants. These are also used in vacuum pump and as superchargers in automobiles.

The major driver of this type of compressor is its ability to reliable operations. It is achieved through the because of only one moving part that is the orbiting scroll. It can start under any system load and without any start components. High volumetric efficiency is another driver for this product. Scroll compressor can reach up to 100% volumetric efficiency because there is no piston for gas compression. So without a piston, there are no gas re-expansion loss. Also since there are no valve ports, losses due to valve ports are eliminated. Furthermore less moving parts means the noise generated, which is considerably lesser than other compressors. Due to their design the gas pulsation is minimized, so the system can operate with less vibration. Since the scroll compressor is fully hermitic it creates problems for repair and maintenance. If the scrolls are damaged, it is advisable to go for a new compressor.

Scroll compressor consists of several parts. This includes, electric motor, suction and discharge. Air passes through suction and discharge tubes. The characteristics of these compressor is the presence of two meshed scrolls. Out of which one is fixed and the other moves around it. These are operated by an electric motor. Scroll compressors can be either single stage or twin stage for providing improved operations.

Scroll compressors are known for their low capacity yield. Even though scroll compressors are available in both small and large capacities. They have a persistent problem that is their susceptibility to external debris. Since the scrolls that do not have the protection of radial or axial compliance, face increased threat from the external objects. It is not easy to increase the capacity by adding more scroll compressors. It creates further problems of capacity control. There are a number of opportunities available for this type of compressors. Currently the global demand is moving from R-22 refrigerants/Freon anticipating the new environmental regulations. In this scenario scroll compressor holds a promising future due to their versatility and adaptability. The newer refrigerant that holds promise is R-410. As against R-22 the newer refrigerant requires more pressure on the compressor. Scroll compressor for its pressure handling attributes is preferable for HVAC operations. Also when operated in reverse the scroll compressor can work as an expander. This attribute also expands the scope of the scroll compressor.
