Piezoelectric Actuator is an electromechanical transducer device that uses electrical energy into mechanical energy to move or adjust the control systems. This is achieved through the presence of piezoceramic actuators that generate linear motion at high speed, and high resolution. When electric voltage is applied the piezoelectric crystal starts bending forward and backward and the vibration plate on which it is placed starts following similar motion. Piezo actuators can convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and also mechanical energy into electrical energy. This is because of the piezo electric effect displayed by piezo crystals in the actuator.

Piezo electric actuators are widely used in advanced research, precision motion control and positioning activities. These are used in super resolution microscopy, semiconductor test and inspection, aerospace and astronomy. Piezo electric actuators have been used in space applications, and also in bio-nano technology domain. In laser mirror alignment piezo electric actuators are used for alignment of mirror mass by a fraction of millimetres. This enables optimal beam alignment of lasers. Piezo electric actuators are widely used for smart phones, tablets, gaming consoles among others. These are also used in acousto-optic modulator, which is used for refining laser frequency. In electron microscopes for adjusting the specimen piezo electric actuator is used. Apart from this piezo actuators are used for X-ray shutters and micro scanning in infrared cameras. Precise patient movement in CT and MRI machines is controlled through piezo actuators. For high intensity focused ultra sound machines creating a localized cavitation, peizo electric actuators are used.

The demand for high end electronics items are expected to increase by multiple times around the world. As per estimate in 2015 alone about 1.4 billion smart phones are used. Due to evolving technologies and faster maturity of technology the market is witnessing sustained growth. As a consequence prices of devices are getting reduced at regular intervals, which is further fuelling demand. Several regions around the world are expected to see various degrees of growth in this regard. Furthermore the market for high end gaming consoles, high definition audio visual devices are also expected to increase due to rising demand. Also these actuators can be used thousands of times without the need for lubrication even in vacuum environment. Since there is very little noise associated with the movement in piezo electric actuators, it is the item of choice for various audio visual equipment.
