The South America tea market was valued at USD xx billion in 2013 and is expected to reach USD xx billion in 2020, with a CAGR of 2.1% during the forecast period, (2017 - 2022). Tea, which is a hot aromatic and flavored beverage, is prepared from the leaves of a shrub, Camellia sinensis. It is one of the most common beverages, containing antioxidants (polyphenols), phytochemicals and flavonoids, all of which have various health benefits.

This region consists of less market share considering the global scenario, but the influence of Asian and Eastern cultures has enhanced the scope of the tea market in the recent years. The driving force of the tea market is its numerous health benefits, including the high antioxidants levels that aid in abetting arthritis. It can also help prevent various cardiovascular and degenerative diseases, help in the improvement of bone density and the management of blood pressure. Health concerned consumers are often drawn to tea, since it is naturally laden with antioxidants, catechins, and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), all of which are positively linked with health benefits and disease prevention.. However health problems associated with high consumption of tea and the pricing of premium products in the emerging countries such as South America etc. hinders the market growth.

The vast tea industry is segmented on the basis of type, packaging, sales channel and geography. Furthermore tea is also segmented based on the production and processing into CTC, orthodox, herbal/flavored and leafy (consisting of black, green, oolong and decaf). Globally, black tea is the highest market share holder, but the maximum growth is estimated for green and herbal/flavored tea due to the awareness about and preference for the health benefits associated with them. Green tea is estimated to have the fastest growth during the forecast period (2017 - 2022).

The packaging scenario also plays an important role in the market growth based on the convenience of use and product self-life. Loose tea, tea bags, instant tea and compressed tea involve different and varied packaging techniques. Tea bags are the most popular option in the western countries and it holds the major share of the market. On the other hand, loose tea holds the major market share in the developing countries because of its cost effectiveness. The tea bag segment is expected to grow rapidly during the forecast period (2017 - 2022).

The sales channel and distribution of the product is yet another vital segment. The convenience stores, supermarkets and general merchandisers are the major sales channels. However, supermarkets and hypermarkets lead the scenario and they are expected to grow during the forecast period as well. The green tea and specialty tea market, consisting of flavored and herbal tea, is growing by leaps and bounds due to their health benefits. In Latin America, Brazil is the largest producer as well as consumer of tea.

Leão Júnior SA continued to lead the tea market with an off-trade value share of 26% in 2014, primarily due to its long-standing presence and strong brand recognition. Cafés la Virginia SA dominates the sales in this area, recording a value share of 41% as of 2014. Innovation of new products and flavors, as well as mergers and acquisitions are the major competitive strategies followed by the key players in the tea market.
