North America Coffee Market Dynamics

If we look at the coffee markets of the USA, Canada, and Mexico at a country level, the USA is the largest consumer and second largest importer of coffee in North America. It is forecasted that the USA would consume around 24 million bags of coffee in 2020. During 2015, the United States imported 30% of its coffee from Brazil, 21% from Colombia and 13% from Vietnam.

In the North American region, people mostly consume high-quality coffee products like Arabica coffee, due to their high disposable incomes. Instant coffee and roasted beans are the most commonly used coffee products in the region. On a retail level, roast and ground coffee take the largest sales share, with 36% of retail sales in North America. Taste of the coffee and point of origin are the key factors in the North American purchase of coffee.

Canada and Mexico follow the USA in coffee consuming traditions. The two countries together consumed 231,000 tonnes of coffee from Brazil, Colombia, and Vietnam this year. Both countries had USD 3.9 billion value of coffee in retail market during 2015.

North American Coffee Industry Players

Most of the coffee import in North America takes place in the form of green coffee beans. All the processing and roasting is done in the USA mainly by large players such as Nestle. It gives a chance for re-exporting coffee beans in processed form to its neighbors from the USA.
