Italy is the second largest importer of coffee beans in Europe, after Germany. Around 96% of coffee beans imported by the country are in the form of green coffee beans. In 2015, Italy accounted for 16% of the total green coffee beans imported by Europe. Italy coffee import trend is witnessing a CAGR of 3.4% and the consumption is increasing at a CAGR of 6.6%. Italian coffee is expected to witness a CAGR of 1% and the retail coffee market is expected to witness a CAGR of 3% during the forecast period (2017 - 2022).

Italian Coffee Market Dynamics

Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, India, and Honduras are the major import destinations for Italian coffee. Intra-European imports have increased by a sharp annual average rate of 9%, in both volume and value. In 2015, Italy alone consumed around 5.9 million bags (each 60 kg) of green coffee of 354 thousand metric tons volume, amounting to about 14% of the consumption by the European Union.

The Italian coffee market plays a significant role in coffee processing and re-exports of coffee beans, both in green and roasted forms. Italy re-exports 8.3 thousand metric tons of coffee. Re-exports positioned Italy as the fifth largest exporter of green coffee in Europe. Italy mainly re-exports coffee beans to Ukraine, Romania, and Greece in Europe. Despite having many small local players, the Italian coffee industry is still dominated by the big companies at a national level.
