Africa contribution to the global coffee bean trade stands at 6.9%. The European and North American countries are the major export destinations for the African coffee. Germany, Italy, France, Belgium and Spain are the major European importers of African coffee beans. Green coffee beans account for a major portion of the African coffee exports. The African coffee market is one of the emerging markets in terms of both production and consumption and is expected to grow in double digits during the forecast period (2017 - 2022).

African Coffee Market Dynamics

During the last five-years, the demand for coffee in Africa has rose by 20% and is expected to continue at a similar pace in the future. Ethiopia is the major coffee consumer in Africa, accounting for 29% of the total consumption in Africa, followed by Algeria at 18%, Egypt at 8%, Sudan at 7%, Morocco at 6%, South Africa at 6%, Tunisia at 5%, Madagascar at 4%, and Cote d'Ivoire at 4%. Other smaller countries consume around 14% of the total coffee produced by the region.

While only Ethiopia and Uganda have shown a growth in coffee production in 2016, the other African countries have witnessed a decline in terms of production. The average yield of coffee per hectare is also lower in Africa as compared to the average yield of other continents. Ethiopia alone accounted for 39% of the total coffee bean production in Africa. Other major producers in the region were Uganda at 23%, Cote d'Ivoire at 13%, Tanzania at 6%, Kenya at 5%, Madagascar at 3% and Cameroon at 3%.
