Vietnam, the world second-largest producer and exporter of coffee after Brazil, is looking at a decline in the production of its Robusta beans, due to factors like inclement weather, aging trees, lack of moisture, and plant diseases. Many farmers have also been holding back their crops from the market to increase prices. With the global demand for coffee set to rise, the need for greater production becomes inevitable.

Vietnam Coffee Market Dynamics

Most of the coffee produced in Vietnam is intended for exports; only 10% of the coffee produced is consumed domestically. With 90% exported as raw coffee, the coffee industry is now looking to increase the output of instant and roasted coffee to 25% of the total coffee production by 2021. It is expected that the total coffee production and consumption will increase by 8% per annum by 2021.
  • substantial demand for cheap coffee has been witnessed in the emerging markets of Asia, especially in the large markets of China and India, where the consumer is shifting from the traditional beverage, tea. Since Robusta beans are used for cheap coffee,
Vietnam accounts for 95% of the Robusta coffee production and 5% of the Arabica coffee production. However, it is trying to make a production shift by increasing its Arabica coffee plantation. The government is aiming at increasing the production of Arabica coffee to 8% by 2021.

Coffee Industry of Vietnam - Notable Trends

Foreign industries account for 65% of Vietnam total coffee trade. Since 2012, the government has been trying to protect the interest of the local coffee traders by completely banning the foreign industry and promoting direct buying from the farmers. Coffee traders are now also providing exile support to farmers by creating a network of input and seedling providers, fertilizer and plant protection sellers.
