The global clinical nutrition market is estimated to be USD XX million in 2016 and is expected to reach USD 51,174 million by 2021, growing at a CAGR of 4.82% during the forecast period from 2016 to 2021.

Clinical nutrition is an area of medicine that offers treatment of medical disorders caused due to improper diet or due to the bodyinability to absorb nutrients available in a normal diet. Clinical nutrition products include clinical foods and dietary supplements that are categorized primarily as pharmaceuticals and are delivered through enteral and parenteral feeding for metabolic disorders, eating or nutritional disorders and other conditions.

Global Clinical Nutrition Market-Market Dynamics

The geriatric population with weak digestive systems constitutes a majority of the clinical nutrition market. There is also good demand for clinical foods in pediatrics.

The increase in number of diabetes cases diagnosed as a result of development in technology has helped in identifying and targeting a larger consumer base for various clinical nutrition products. This is a major driver for the US market. About 9.3% of the population, that is, 29.1 million people in the US, have diabetes, out of which 21 million people are diagnosed, while 8.1 million are undiagnosed. Some of the other drivers of the global clinical nutrition market are:

Growing aging population

Increasing incidence and diagnosis of diseases like cardiovascular diseases, cancer, dementia and diabetes

Increased preterm births in high-income countries

Increasing acceptance and adoption of infant and child nutrition as a result of changing lifestyle in the developing countries

The market is highly constrained due to strict FDA regulations and market volatility.

The global clinical nutrition market is composed of various market segments that contribute to the total market value. The global clinical nutrition market has been segmented based on various therapeutic areas where clinical nutrition is needed; various ingredients that are present in clinical nutrition products; the route of administration of these products and the end-user of the products. Further, each of these broad segments is divided into sub-segments. The therapeutic areas covered in this report are protein maldigestion, malabsorption, food allergies, diarrhea, cancer, diabetes, short-bowel syndrome, GI- tract impairment, acute lung injury, and acute respiratory distress. The segmentation based on ingredients includes amino acids, vitamins and minerals, carbohydrate and others. The segmentation based on the route of administration includes parenteral and enteral nutrition and lastly, the segmentation based on end-user includes application in infants, children, adults, and in the geriatric population.

One of the key findings of the study is that the enteral route of administration contributes a higher share of the market than the parenteral route of administration. This is mainly because only the patients with gut malfunctioning are fed by parenteral mode and rest all are fed by enteral modes of administration.

The global clinical nutrition market has also been geographically segmented into Asia-Pacific (China, India, Japan, Australia and others), Europe (Germany, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia and Rest of Europe), North America (USA, Mexico and Canada), Middle East and North Africa (Egypt, GCC and Rest of MENA), Latin America (Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and others) and the Rest of the World.

Owing to the high prevalence and increasing incidence of chronic diseases, developing healthcare infrastructure, increasing awareness about clinical nutrition and rising income of the people, the market in Asia-Pacific is the largest in the world and it is expected that this trend will continue till 2021.
