Agriculture in Bahrain historically is an important sector of the economy. Before the development of the oil industry, date palm cultivation dominated Bahrain’s agriculture, producing sufficient dates for both domestic consumption and export. At least twenty-three varieties of dates are grown even now, and the leaves, branches, buds, and flowers of the date palm also are used extensively.Consumption is expected to increase in future and will grow at a CAGR of XX.XX % till 2021.Bahrain is a big importer of Cereals and other agricultural products.

Drivers
Bahrain Agriculture Market is developing due to rapidly increasing tourism (normal as well as at the time of Holy festival of Ramadan), Increase in consumption, advanced technologies, low water requirement in Horticulture process and Government Initiatives. They are also using Desalination for potable drinking water, which helped the country to increase the production of crops, fruits and vegetables. Horticulture is the new trend in agriculture production which have given boost to the production.

Key factors driving the growth of the Fishery Consumables & Meat industry of the country are inclination of growth towards tourism, robust economic growth, changing consumer trends, and advanced technologies. Strong economic growth leading to higher protein consumption, growing numbers of domestic, as well as, expat population.The consumer food service industry in the Bahrain is unique and profitable, and is expected to continue experiencing strong growth in the future. With a large proportion of expatriates and standards of living in the world, the demand for a variety of foodservice options is on the rise driving the dairy .

Restraints and Challenges
Low water availability , limited rainfall , limited arable land are the biggest restraints for agriculture production in the country.The area is dry and it has stayed like this for a long period and it is very tough to practice traditional ways of farming is such conditions.Very few parts of the country have above average conditions and support farming and hence the production has been low in the country.Moreover the desert storms add to the worry and harm the produce. Due to these reasons farmers have incurred huge losses in the past which has led to people moving away from farming and agriculture.Such harsh conditions restrict the growth of dairy as well as fishery consumables & meat market as it is tough for the animals also to cope with such conditions.

Opportunities
The Government of Bahrain is encouraging agricultural companies to invest in foreign countries that have a comparative advantage in producing certain crops and import their products back into Bahrain.The Bahrain government has developed a ‘National Action Plan’ to encourage healthy lifestyles, covering a number of programs that include increasing the percentage of people consuming fruit and vegetables by 30% and to ensure 3-5 fruit & vegetable intakes, every day.Moreover government is lending its support to dairy as well as fishery consumables & meat market as they want to reduce their imports and become self sufficient in the future.
