Agriculture Production in Saudi Arabia is diminishing and country will face a food shortfall after 2016. Agriculture production growth was tremendous in 1980's and 1990’s. Saudi Arabia amended its policies in 1980’s and became fifth largest Wheat producer in the world. Saudi increased production of all the crops till 1990's until they became a steady and continuous producer of cereals. Saudi Arabia became one of the world's leading producer of wheat, utilized most of their ground water resources for production and now going to become a net importer of wheat, barley and other cereals from 2016.Consumption of cereals in UAE will grow at a CAGR of XX.XX % till 2021.The market for fruits and vegetables in Saudi Arabia is increasing and this increase is attributed to the growing disposable incomes of the people and the increasing health concerns of the Saudi population.

Restraints and Challenges
Low water availability , limited rainfall , limited arable land are the biggest restraints for agriculture production in the country.The area is dry and it has stayed like this for a long period and it is very tough to practice traditional ways of farming is such conditions.Very few parts of the country have above average conditions and support farming and hence the production has been low in the country.Moreover the desert storms add to the worry and harm the produce. Due to these reasons farmers have incurred huge losses in the past which has led to people moving away from farming and agriculture.Such harsh conditions restrict the growth of dairy as well as fishery consumables & meat market as it is tough for the animals also to cope with such conditions.

Opportunities
The Saudi government is encouraging agricultural companies to invest in foreign countries that have comparative advantage in producing certain crops and re-export their products back to Saudi Arabia. The crops targeted by this initiative include wheat, rice, barley, yellow corn, soybeans, and green forage. The Saudi government is providing financial incentives to encourage Saudi investors to take part in this food security initiative and invest overseas.Moreover government is lending its support to dairy as well as fishery consumables & meat market as they want to reduce their imports and become self sufficient in the future.
