Report Description

GCC has negligible production of cereals and other agriculture products.Increase in population and future prospects in food industry are reasons for increase in consumption. The food crisis of 2007 forced GCC to import Wheat at a very high price as major exporters like Russia, Ukraine, India, etc. stopped food exports which forced GCC to import food items from international market at a very high price. GCC is a net importer of Cereals like Wheat, Barley, Millet, Maize and Sorghum.Import of cereal crops like Wheat, Barley, Millet. Maize and Sorghum are going to increase as there is no production of these crops and consumption is increased. Prices of all the crops were increased from 2009 to 2010.Consumption is increased of all the crops and it will grow at a CAGR of XX.XX % CAGR till 2020. Imports are also increased in GCC.

Drivers
GCC Agriculture Market is developing due to rapidly increasing tourism (normal as well as at the time of Holy festival of Ramadan), Increase in consumption, advanced technologies, low water requirement in Horticulture process and Government Initiatives. They are also using Desalination for potable drinking water, which helped the country to increase the production of crops, fruits and vegetables. Horticulture is the new trend in agriculture production which have given boost to the production.

Key factors driving the growth of the Fishery Consumables & Meat industry of the country are inclination of growth towards tourism, robust economic growth, changing consumer trends, and advanced technologies. Strong economic growth leading to higher protein consumption, growing numbers of domestic, as well as, expat population. The consumer food service industry in the GCC is unique and profitable, and is expected to continue experiencing strong growth in the future. With a large proportion of expatriates and standards of living in the world, the demand for a variety of foodservice options is on the rise driving the dairy .

Restraints and Challenges
Low water availability , limited rainfall , limited arable land are the biggest restraints for agriculture production in the country. The area is dry and it has stayed like this for a long period and it is very tough to practice traditional ways of farming is such conditions.Very few parts of the country have above average conditions and support farming and hence the production has been low in the country. Moreover the desert storms add to the worry and harm the produce. Due to these reasons farmers have incurred huge losses in the past which has led to people moving away from farming and agriculture.Such harsh conditions restrict the growth of dairy as well as fishery consumables & meat market as it is tough for the animals also to cope with such conditions.
Opportunities
Signing of the GAFTA and other free trade agreements will open up different avenues of trade and procurement. GAFTA is expected to boost, both intra GCC, as well as, intra MENA trade. The governments of the GCC countries have undertaken several food security initiatives in the form of framing policies that encourage private investments in the agricultural sector. The governments started implementation of policies, which phase out domestic production of plants that need high amounts of water. This makes GCC the perfect market for exporters of agricultural produce. After recent land privatization law, passed by the African government, most of the governments of the GCC countries have invested in obtaining land in Africa and producing fruits and vegetables for the country. Moreover governments are lending their support to dairy as well as fishery consumables & meat market as they want to reduce their imports and become self sufficient in the future in most of the nations

New Developments
  • To improve food security in UAE, the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development invested USD 35.4 million for developing 130 farms.
  • The newly appointed Minister of Agriculture of Saudi Arabia , Waleed Al-Kuraiji said that the Kingdom will rely completely on imported wheat starting from 2016.
