The dairy sector in Oman is primarily driven by Saudi brand Almarai and local brand A’SAFWAH, made by DHOFAR cattle feed. Other Saudi imports such as Al Safi-Danone and Nadec are less prominent compared to their previous year’s production. Almarai has established itself as one of the leading suppliers in almost all product sectors in the market. Other Saudi producers attempt to mirror Almarai’s initiatives in Oman failed as they were unable to withstand higher overhead costs, operational hurdles, and their inability to pass on price increases to consumers because of the government imposed price freeze. Almarai has improved considerably in recent years, adding new sales depots and augmenting its fleet. Brand owners such as Saudi Almarai, Local Dhofar Cattle Feed and the UAE’s Al Rawabi have an increasing influence in the previously restricted areas. Due to the expansion of modern trade across the country, numerous hypermarket’s and supermarket’s styled retail outlets have been launched by grocery chains from neighboring UAE as well as by home growth retailers.
