Japan's soft drink packaging market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 1.4% in terms of sales volume over the forecast period 2017 - 2022. The reduction in the sales of soft drinks in 2014 has highly affected the soft drinks packaging market. PET bottles packaging lead the Japanese market, followed by metal cans packaging. Health and wellness concerns among consumers are expected to increase over the forecast period. The Japanese government is trying to liberalize the restrictions on health claims for food and beverages in 2015, which is expected to encourage manufacturers to develop functional beverages besides food for specific health usage (FOSHU) drinks. Products with health functions are expected to have an increasing presence within soft drinks, the sales of which are set to be static over the forecast period. Manufacturers in Japan will continue to focus on the development of more environmentally sustainable PET bottles by reducing weight, promoting recycling to consumers and retailers, and producing new bottles that reuse materials.

The majority of carbonated soft drinks are sold in aluminum cans and PET bottles. They are also sold in bulk in the food service industry through soda fountains. Only a very small portion of CSDs are still packaged in glass bottles, and these are usually packaged in smaller sizes, due to changing consumer preferences and lifestyles as well as increased costs associated with transporting heavy, low-volume glass containers versus high volume-to-packaging ratio PET bottles and aluminum cans.
