The global proppants market was valued at USD XX.XX in 2016 and is projected to reach USD XX.XX by 2021, at a CAGR of 14.0% during the forecast period from 2016 to 2021.

Proppants are the sand or other granular substances that are injected into fractures to hold or open formation fractures which are created by hydraulic fracturing. Although proppants have been used in oil and gas production for 70 years, the recent emergence of horizontal drilling technology with multistage hydraulic fracturing in shale gas extraction has created new opportunities for growth in the mid-2000s. They exhibit a good performance in most conditions except in wells with high closure pressures.

Global Proppants Market Segmentation

The global proppants market is segmented on the basis of type (frac sand, resin coated, and ceramic) and on the basis of geography (North America (USA, Canada, Mexico), Europe (Russia, Poland, United Kingdom, France), Middle East & Africa (Algeria, South Africa, Libya, others), Asia-Pacific (China, Australia, India, others), South America (Argentina, Brazil, others), and the Rest of the World). The frac sand segment is the most inexpensive kind and accounts for 80.0% share of the demand. This demand is expected to continue to account for the largest chunk of the market due to its cost advantages. The ceramic proppants will be limited to areas requiring high performance products because of its high cost. Their market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15.0% owing to their reliability in extreme conditions. Resin coated proppants are also expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.0% due to the relative cost advantages over ceramic proppants and performance advantage over frac sand. Improved fracturing techniques have allowed sand to be used in applications previously thought to be beyond its performance range.

The global demand for proppants has increased more than ten times since the advent of shale gas. Proppants have provided further momentum to the drilling and completion activities as a result of the spike in crude oil prices and success of early ventures in horizontal drilling. North America is the largest consumer of proppants and accounted for 80.0% of the market share in 2013. The region is further expected to witness a high growth in the coming future, owing to the high growth potential of the U.S market. China and Russia have the largest reserves in the Asia-Pacific and Europe respectively. As a result of available reserves and rise in the number of new hydraulic fracturing sites the market is expected to further contribute towards a healthy growth in the near future.
