The Global Polyimide (PI) Market has been estimated at USD 950 million in 2015 and is projected to reach USD 1,240.22 million by 2020, at a CAGR of 5.48% during the forecast period from 2015 to 2020. PI are imide polymers that are in production since 1950s. They are high temperature resistant and are used in rugged applications. There are thermoplastic as well thermosetting PI polymers available, depending on the process used.

PI has a wide variety of applications in commercial, military and other applications. PI is used in electronics industry as adhesive, flexible cables, as an insulating film and in medical tubing. It is used in 3D printing, aerospace, chemicals, automotive, water treatment, healthcare and other industries. Various major companies around the world manufacture them.

The market is expected to be driven by growing demand for food safe and bio-compatible polymers all over the world. The increasing usage of PI in automotive and aerospace industry is also a healthy sign for the PI market. However, PI polymers are expensive in comparison to other polymers and metals. The growing awareness on green vehicles like electric vehicles is expected to boost the PI market in the coming future.

The market has also been geographically segmented into APAC, North America, Europe, South America and MEA. In terms of consumption in 2015, APAC led the market. This high usage is driven by a rapid growth in electronics industry that occurred chiefly due to the urbanization, foreign investment and technological development in developing countries of China and India.

Company profiles of the major PI manufacturers have been discussed in this study, including DuPont, General Electric, Mitsui Chemicals, SABIC, Saint Gobain and Toray International Inc., among others.
