The Asia-Pacific synthesis gas (syngas) market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.2% during the forecast period, to reach 57,026.66 MW thermal power by 2020. The market in the Asia-Pacific region is the current world leader in syngas production. This can be attributed to the high demand for power sources and availability of abundant coal reserves in the region. A large majority of the operating plants of this region are in China. The countries like India, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan also have several syngas production plants.

Syngas is conceptually similar to natural gas, containing a mixture of hydrogen, methane and carbon monoxide. It can be combusted in a gas turbine engine to produce electricity. Syngas only has 50% of the energy density compared to natural gas due to which syngas is mostly suited for the production of transportation fuels and other chemical products. Syngas can also be utilized as a basic chemical building block in the petrochemical and refining industries.
