The global defoamers market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.3% from 2015 and reach a value of $ 3.55 billion by 2020.

Foam is pockets of gas trapped in a liquid or solid. Industrially, foam is undesirable as it causes a lot of problems. They can lead to defective surface coatings, prevent proper filling of containers and block oxygen transfer from air which in turn blocks microbial respiration in processes like aerobic respiration, thereby making defoamers indispensable to various industries. A defoamer is a substance that is insoluble in the foaming media and has surface acting properties.

Rising demand from Asia-Pacific, especially from the Chinese and Indian markets is a major driving factor for the defoamers market. The largest markets are Europe and North America. But, the fastest growing market is the Asia-Pacific market.

The factors driving the markets around the world are different. The demand in Asia-Pacific is mainly from the water treatment and paint industries. The demand in Europe and North America is shifting towards environment friendly defoamers, especially in view of stringent regulations on VOC containing defoamers, and concerns regarding the health problems that they cause. The US Environment Protection Agency and the Oslo/Paris Commission have issued regulations on the use of such substances in the US and Europe respectively, and more countries are following their example. The dip seen in the paper and pulp industry due to digitalization has resulted in a lowering of demand from this market segment.

Defoamers find application in various industries like petroleum, paints and coatings, paper and pulp, food and beverages, water and waste water treatment, textiles, mining and agricultural chemicals among others. Defoamers can also be classified based on their type as oil based defoamers, water based defoamers, silicone based defoamers, powder defoamers, EO/PO defoamers, and alkyl polyacrylates. In the defoamers market, silicon based defoamers had the largest market share in 2015.

Key players outlined in this report include Air Products & Chemicals Inc., BASF, Dow Chemical Co., Kemira Oyj, Eastman Chemical Company, Ashland Inc. and Bluestar Silicones among several others.

Drivers:

There is a demand for defoaming agents from various industries. This presents a wide and diversified market for defoamers. Rapid industrialization and urbanization in countries in the Asia-Pacific region, especially in China and India have increased the market for various industries like petroleum, paints, water treatment, textiles etc. This has in turn increased the demand for defoamers. There is also a huge demand for new and innovative products.

Restraints:

Stringent regulations on VOC containing defoamers, especially in Europe and North America have affected the market. The increase reliance on digital technologies have affected the paper and pulp market, which in turn has affected the demand for defoamers from this market segment.
