The global activated carbon market was valued at USD XX.XX in 2015 and is expected to reach USD 4.46 billion by 2020, at a CAGR of 10.8% during the forecast period from 2015 to 2020. In terms of tonnage, the global market was at 1.56 million metric tons in 2014. Asia Pacific dominated the global activated carbon market, accounting for over 40.0% of the total volume in 2014, with China being a leading exporter, accounting for over 35.0% of the total Asian activated carbon exports in 2014.

The on the basis of product type into powder, granular and pelletalized. On the basis of end-user industry, the market is segmented into water treatment, food & beverages, healthcare, automotive, air purification, solvent recovery, mining, and others. Among the end-user industry segment, water treatment is the major end-user. Over the next few years, the air purification application segment is expected to grow at a fast pace when compared to the water treatment segment. Other applications include food & beverages, pharmaceutical & medical, and automotives. The report studies the activated carbon product, raw material types, and their importance and also gives an idea about the import-export scenario, globally.

On the basis of geography global activated carbon market is segmented has been segmented into Asia-Pacific, North America and the rest of the world.

Key product segments analyzed and reported in this study include powdered, granular, and pelletalized activated carbon products. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) is mainly produced by chemical activation, and is used for drinking water treatment and mercury removal. In the water purification application, the degree of effectiveness of GAC filters is directly related to contact time with the water and flow rate of the water. Powdered activated carbon dominated the global demand in 2014, accounting for 55.6% of the total volume. However, the demand for the powdered application is expected to be primarily driven by the air purification applications and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.9% from 2014 to 2020.

Owing to the rise in alarms over the worsening environmental standards, the environmental protection agency (EPA) has issued the mercury and air toxics standard, which focuses on halting the presence of mercury, acid gas, and some other common metal emissions from oil and coal powered plants. This is expected to boost the growth of the global activated carbon market in the near future.

However, one of the key challenges in this market is the shortage of raw materials, such as coconut shell charcoal that is used for the making of activated carbon.
