Zeolite molecular sieves are used in numerous systems for the drying and purification of liquids and gases. They are either produced from naturaly occurring zeolites or they are synthetically produced crystalline metal aluminosilicates that have been activated for adsorption by removing their water of hydration. Their structure remains unchanged during the process which leads to the formation of highly porous adsorbents with uniform pore sizes and molecular dimensions. They are used to dry, purify and separate liquids and gases. They can be reused by regeneration where the adsorbate molecules are removed from the molecular sieve bed by heating and purging with a carrier gas.

Molecular sieves are mostly used in petroleum refineries where they provide energy efficient options to certain separation processes that involve heating of the oils. Another major end-user industry is detergents industry. For purification purposes, they are use in waste & water treatment industries, air purification, nuclear industry, etc. Some of the other end-user industries include agricultural products, automotive, cosmetics, industrial gas production, heating & refrigeration, nuclear industry and pharmaceutical industry.
