The global water treatment chemicals market was valued at USD 23.02 billion in 2015. This market is expected to reach USD XX billion by 2021, at an estimated CAGR of 7.56% during the forecast period (2017 - 2022).

Water treatment is a process where impurities such as undesirable chemicals, biological contaminants, suspended solids and gases are removed from contaminated water. The goal of this process is to produce water that is useful for specific purposes. Apart from human consumption, water treatment serves a wide range of purposes including meeting requirements of agricultural, medical, household, pharmacological, chemical and industrial applications.

Wastewater treatment is defined as the process of converting wastewater that is no longer suitable for use. Wastewater is treated, either for reuse or returned to the water cycle. Wastewater treatment chemicals constitute one such technique, wherein contaminated or wastewater is treated with chemicals, in order to make it suitable for human consumption as well as for other purposes that require clean water. The high incidence of water-borne epidemics has increased the urge for water purification, leading to the utilization of wastewater treatment chemicals for the purpose of purification of drinking water and for use in industrial & commercial applications. The standards for clean water have increased, demanding improved treatment methods and chemicals.

The market is driven by a number of factors, such as stringent regulations to control wastewater and produced water disposal, rising surface and ground water pollution and growing demand from power and industrial applications. However, this market faces certain drawbacks, such as the dearth of awareness about wastewater treatment chemicals and cooling water treatment chemicals. These factors may act as a roadblock to the growth of the global water treatment chemicals market.

The global water treatment chemicals market can be broadly segmented by type, into flocculants, coagulants, biocides & disinfectants, defoamers & defoaming agents, pH adjusters, odor control agents and others. By application, the market can be segmented into commercial & institutional, electric power generation, oil & gas, manufacturing, mining & mineral processing, municipal and others. The market has also been geographically segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America and Middle East & Africa.

The shifting focus toward the usage of green chemicals and the increasing adoption rate in Asia-Pacific and Middle East is expected to offer numerous opportunities for the growth of the global water treatment chemicals market. Some of the major companies dominating the market, in terms of products and services, are Ecolab Inc. (Nalco), GE Water and Process Technologies, Veolia Water Solutions and Technologies, Berwind (BWA Water Additives), E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. and the Dow Chemical Company.
