In recent years, the term transparent ceramics has broadened to include materials that are not only transparent to electromagnetic waves in the visible spectrum but also by infrared and ultraviolet light.

Transparent ceramics promise to greatly expand the availability of low-cost, high-quality components in much larger sizes than is possible with traditional crystals. For example, many classes of laser designs could benefit from ceramic-based laser structures such as amplifiers with built-in edge claddings. Also, ceramic amplifier slabs could provide more robust and compact designs for high-peak-power, fusion-class lasers for stockpile stewardship and high-average-power lasers for theatre missile defense.

Transparent ceramics are also used for manufacturing bulbs and lamp envelopes for commercial and vehicle lights, as well as in applications where resistance to high temperatures and harsh chemical conditions is required. In addition, transparent ceramics can be introduced for manufacturing lights and displays based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
