The South American proppants market was valued at USD 1006.3 million in 2015 and is projected to reach USD XX.XX million by 2020, at a CAGR of 15.9% during the forecast period.

Proppants are a solid material, usually sand or other granular substances, that are injected into the fractures to hold or keep fracture open created by hydraulic fracturing. Although, they have been used in oil and gas production for 70 years now, however, with the recent emergence of horizontal drilling technology with multistage hydraulic fracturing in shale gas extraction, has created new opportunities for the growth of the proppants market in the mid-2000s. Proppants are vital materials in the process of hydraulic fracturing, used extensively for the extraction of shale gas and oil from shale rocks. The quantity of proppants used depends on the thickness of shale rocks and the length of the well. On an average, for a single horizontal well approximately 1,600 tons of proppants are used during the first stage of drilling. For instance, for one fracking length of 200-300 meters of well, about 100-160 metric tons of proppants are utilized. However, the aforementioned quantity depends on the rocks condition and the properties deep in the ground.

Market Dynamics of the South America Proppants Market

Improvements in the fracturing technology
Manufacturing of better quality frac sand

Growing environmental concerns related to the fracturing technology
High costs of the ceramic proppants

South America Proppants Market Segmentation

The South American Proppants market can be broadly segmented on the basis of product type (frac sand, resin coated and ceramic) and on the basis of geography (Brazil, Argentina, and the Rest of South America). In terms of market revenue in 2015, Argentina led the market with a total share of XX.XX% of the South American market, followed by Brazil. Argentina is the largest producer as well as the consumer of natural gas in South America. The country has about 150 shale gas wells for the production and the number are expected to increase in the coming years, as the country is witnessing a steady increase in the demand for energy. This, in turn, will have a positive impact on the South America proppants market. However, the high cost of the ceramic proppants may hinder the growth of this market.
