About Military Aircraft Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)

Auxiliary power units (APUs) are installed in vehicles to provide energy for functions apart from propulsion. The primary function of APU is to power (electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic, depending on the design) the avionics. It also generates shaft power to start the main engine (where the turbines require a high rotational speed to provide sufficient air compression for self-sustenance), to operate the air conditioning of the aircraft, and to compress air during aircraft ground operation. Also, some APUs are connected to a hydraulic pump, allowing the pilot to operate the aircraft's hydraulic equipment (such as flaps or flight controls) before engine start.

The cost of a military aircraft ranges in hundreds of millions, which makes it difficult for budget-bound defense ministries to procure newer aircraft on a regular basis and increases their dependence on retrofitting of an aircraft. An average life span of a fighter jet lies between 40 and 50 years, depending on the type, while the average life span for an APU is between five and seven years, which means that an aircraft in its due course of life undergoes more than six retro fitments for APU. Also, the incorporation of newer onboard weapon systems and avionics have increased the demand for retro-fitment of newer and powerful APU.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is negative effects of using batteries. APU, which powers an aircraft, needs an initial supply of electric power to start its own motor. The two types of power sources for an APU are battery power and electric ground power (lesser in use). Thus, the use of battery in an aircraft APU is prominent. The most widely used batteries by APUs till a few years back were the Nickel-cadmium batteries. However, its negative characteristics (toxic, generation of hazardous waste, and the requirement of full discharge before recharge) paved the way for the adoption of lithium-ion batteries.
