The population of Macedonia (FYROM) was 2.08 million and the current gross domestic product (GDP) was $10.90 billion as of 2016. Macedonia (FYROM) solar photovoltaic (PV) power market value, which was USD XXX million in 2016, is expected to grow to USD XXX million in 2017, at a CAGR of XXX percent. Geographical position and climate in Macedonia offer a very good perspective to intensify the use of solar photovoltaic (PV) power, with the country having one of the most favourable solar regimes in Europe. The annual average for daily solar radiation varies between 3.4 kWh/m2 in the Northern part of the country (Skopje) and 4.2 kWh/m2 in the South Western part (Bitola).
Strategy for the development of the energy sector in the Republic of Macedonia until 2030 (Official Gazette of Republic of Macedonia No. 61/10) was adopted by the Government of the Republic of Macedonia as prepared by the Macedonian Academy of Science and Art, in order to ensure qualitative standards and certain energy supply to the customers. The maximum use of renewable energy source (RES) electricity is one of the priorities of the Strategy. According to the Strategy, the participation of RES in total energy use in Macedonia presented as a percentage will increase from thirteen point eight percent (13.8%) in the year 2005 to twenty-one percent (21%) in the year 2020. Building of new small HPPs, wind power plants, solar photovoltaic power plants, biomass and biogas CHP plants are planned.
The country’s main strategy to meet the growing need of power is to reduce the energy dependency by increasing the energy efficiency, increased use of renewable resources, cogeneration natural gas power plants and connecting to the European power infrastructure.
