Insurance proved to be one of the few sectors that are resilient to the deep economic recession in Brazil, marked by stubbornly high inflation, eroding job market and falling disposable income. The total insurance premium income in the country rose by 0.8% in real terms in 2015 and by a further 4% y/y in 2016, as the heightened economic and political uncertainty increased the demand for insurance protection and the people’s propensity to save. Although Brazil was the 14th largest insurance market in the world in 2016, the country continued to lag behind developed countries in terms of insurance penetration. This, coupled with the alignment of national legislation with the Solvency II standards, and the liberalisation of the reinsurance market, opens lucrative opportunities for domestic and foreign investors.
