About Intermittent Catheters

Urinary catheters are of three types: intermittent catheters, Foley catheters or indwelling catheters, and external catheters. Intermittent catheters (IC) are preferred by patients with bladder dysfunction, specifically neurogenic bladder. The use of intermittent catheterization is preferred over indwelling catheterization. In patients suffering from spinal cord injury, intermittent catheters reduce urinary infections, preserve renal function, reduce the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), and improve bladder emptying leading to better prognosis and improve the quality of life of the patient.

The analysts forecast the global intermittent catheters market to grow at a CAGR of 6.33% during the period 2017-2021.

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global intermittent catheters market: Coloplast, C.R Bard, Hollister, Teleflex, and B. Braun Melsungen.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Adapta medical, ASID BONZ, At Home Medical Products, ConvaTec, Cure Medical, Hunter Urology, Medical Technologies of Georgia, Pennine Healthcare, and Romsons.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “The latest trend gaining momentum in the market is Growing focus of vendors toward using advanced biocompatible materials. Intermittent catheters are available in a large variety of shapes, sizes, materials, and coatings. The selection of appropriate catheter by the caregiver for patients is done by taking several factors in to consideration such as medical need, expected period of use, personal choice, and also potential risks involved. Intermittent catheters are typically made of three common biocompatible materials, namely silicon, PVC, and latex rubber. The biocompatibility of these materials depends on patient's reaction to the device and its function.”

According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is Increasing incidence of urinary incontinence coupled with ageing population. Intermittent catheters are widely used in urinary incontinence patients. Urinary incontinence is defined as the involuntary leakage of urine, which is mainly caused due to individual’s lack of control or weak control over the sphincter. According to the American Urological Association, one-third of men and women in the US experience urinary incontinence. This problem is seen most commonly in persons aged 65 years and above as they find it difficult to control the bladder sphincter.

Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is Risks/complications associated with intermittent catheters. Intermittent catheterization is a preferred procedure for treating people with bladder incontinence, who have issues with emptying bladder completely. Adverse events and complications can arise especially when patients perform self-catheterization for long term. Urethral and bladder/scrotal related complications include bleeding, stricture, urethritis and epididymitis. Bladder related complications may also cause urinary tract infection (UTI), bleeding, and stone formation.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
