Country Profile: Spirits Sector in Russia

Summary

Russian Spirits sector accounted for a volume share of 6.1% of the global market and 50.6% of the regional (Eastern Europe) market, in 2016, while registering negative growth during 2011-2016. Reduced purchasing power of consumers due to economic crisis in the country, and the Russian government’s anti-alcohol state policy can be attributed to the decline in the Spirits sector. However, the sector is expected to grow at a CAGR of 0.3% during 2016-2021. Per capita consumption stood at 13 liters compared to the global and Eastern Europe levels of 6.4 liters and 10.4 liters, respectively, in 2016.

Vodka was the largest with value sales of RUB1,249,270.8 Million (US$18,753.1 Million) in 2016. The Rum market is expected to grow the fastest at a CAGR of 11.2% compared to Brandy (3.9%), Liqueurs, Gin & Genever, Specialty Spirits, Tequila & Mezcal, Vodka (-2.2%), and Whiskey.

On-trade transactions accounted for the largest volume share of 38.5% in the distribution of Spirits. It was followed by Hypermarkets & Supermarkets and Food & Drinks Specialists with shares of 29.9% and 23.5%, respectively, in the same year. Glass is the most commonly used package material in the Russian Spirits sector. In 2016, it accounted for a volume share of 99.96%, followed by Rigid Plastics with a share of 0.04% respectively.

Consumption of Spirits is higher among the male population in 2016 compared to females. Consumption of Spirits was also high among Russian consumers who received Tertiary education. In terms of consumption by age group, Older Consumers and Older Young Adults together accounted for a 58.6% share in 2016.

The top five brands in the Russian Spirits sector accounted for 16.7% volume share in 2016. Private labels accounted for 1.9% share by volume in the same year.
