The Indian lighting industry is registering strong growth and is anticipated to grow with a higher CAGR in forecast periods. The government’s ambitious energy conservation target is the driving factor for this transition. In India, the lighting market is segregated into four major parts, i.e., Luminaries, Lamps, LEDs, Accessories, Components, and Control Gears (ACCs). The LED segment is leading the market and is likely to capture tremendous growth during the upcoming timeframe. By product, the Indian LED lighting market is segregated into LED Street Lights, LED Tube Lights, LED Bulbs & Lamps, LED Luminaries and LED Down-lights. LED Bulbs & Lamps are leading with a volume market share of more than 60% as compared to Luminaries, which have the lowest market share. The LED lighting industry in India has created numerous opportunities. However, LED lights have enormously entered into residential, commercial, industrial and many other sectors in the Indian market. However, the market still has to go a long way.

According to the report title, India LED Lighting Market Outlook, 2027-28, the LED market in India is anticipated to acquire more than INR 55000 Crore during the forecast period. In the current market scenario, LED lighting products have gained a prominent spot in the lighting market owing to their various benefits over older lighting technologies. Nowadays, the stipulation for LED lighting in India is largely driven by Tier-1 cities because of stronger awareness. However, in the future, the demand is also anticipated to grow from Tier-2, Tier-3, and rural markets, especially in the street lighting and industrial lighting segments.

Furthermore, government initiatives, projects, and various schemes will open up new markets for the LED lighting industry. The West region of India is prominent in the LED market with a market share of more than 30% in volume terms. However, the penetration of the LED market is still low in the eastern region of India. The end-user application market is segmented into residential, commercial, industrial, and others, which consist of highways and public places. The residential segment is the most penetrated segment, with a market share of more than 40% in the LED market.

However, because of the government’s ambitious energy conservation target, the overall LED market is registering strong growth and is anticipated to grow tremendously even over the long term. Currently, the demand for LED lighting systems is primarily concentrated in the North and South regions due to growing urbanization rates and an increasing number of government initiatives that encourage the use of LED lights. The government’s support through various regulations that promote investments in energy efficient lighting technologies has expanded the applications of LED lights across various industrial, commercial, and residential sectors.

LED lights have emerged as a powerful source of lighting over the past several years. Due to their numerous advantages over conventional lighting technology, they have swiftly gained prominence in the Indian lighting market. Although the Indian LED lighting market is at a nascent stage, it offers innumerable opportunities for growth over the next few decades. As India represents one of the biggest lighting markets, it offers a lucrative option for LED manufacturers to set up their facilities in the region. Skilled labour, ease of doing business, and demographic advantages provide a sustainable environment for the LED industry.

The LED sector is anticipated to grow in full swing due to the expansion in infrastructure development such as highways, commercial places, etc., which coupled with socioeconomic extension and inclination of people towards energy-efficient and innovative lighting solutions, the further actions are well defined. Due to the environmental awareness among people, this has additionally built the push. The government’s programs, such as Power for All, will keep the momentum going. The ongoing transformation and infrastructure expansion projects are further expected to increase the demand for LED lighting, leading to market growth. For instance, initiatives such as Smart City are expected to support the development of the LED lighting market in India.

Moreover, the initial cost of the LED lighting housing can sometimes depend on the environment as well. Lighting systems deployed in harsh environments have to be safeguarded to withstand extreme conditions. Such a safeguarding arrangement can increase the cost of the equipment.

The huge energy-saving potential of LED lamps, coupled with their decreasing prices over the past few years, has accelerated the demand for these lighting products across India. Additionally, many government policies have been implemented in recent years to increase their adoption. For instance, in March 2021, India launched the Gram Ujala scheme, offering cheap LED bulbs in rural areas at INR 10. In its first phase, launched from Arrah in Bihar, 15 million LED bulbs were to be distributed across the villages of Arrah (Bihar), Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Vijaywada (Andhra Pradesh), Nagpur (Maharashtra), and western Gujarat. Further, as per the union power ministry of India, Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) has already distributed 5 million LED bulbs under the Gram Ujala program, as of December 2021.

Product innovation also continues to rise in the segment, with many new product launches in the segment. For instance, in March 2021, Realme India announced plans to launch Realme Smart LED bulbs in India. The product has a rated power rating of 9W with an input voltage of AC 120250V. The lights can be controlled using the Realme Link application, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa.

Several government policies are driving the adoption of LED lighting in the highway and roadway infrastructure of India. SLNP (Street Lighting National Programme) is the world's most extensive streetlight replacement program, and UJALA is the world's largest domestic lighting project. Both have been implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs under the Ministry of Power, Government of India.

Additionally, the increasing usage in government projects creates significant opportunities for the market segment in the coming years. For instance, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) started the much-delayed LED street light project in Kolkata, West Bengal. In the project, LED lights will replace all sodium vapour streetlamps across 41 wards. Nearly INR 32 Crore will be invested in this project. The project will deploy LED lights from a wide variety of power ranges up to 190 wattage. This will further fuel the growth of this segment in the coming years. LED lights are versatile and available in various colors, sizes, wattages, and shapes, which are used for decoration purposes during the festive seasons in India. These factors are driving the use of LED lighting in commercial spaces.

The Indian LED lighting market is highly fragmented, with many domestic and international players in the country. Due to the fragmented nature of the market, the competition among the players is high. Due to the continuous fall in LED prices in the country, competition has further increased among the manufacturers, driving further innovation and broader product choices at lower costs.

With wireless Smart Lighting, the LED industry can improve its profitability as compared to selling standard products like bulbs and down lights. By entering into Human Centric Lighting, various sectors like offices, hospitality, educational institutes, as well as the healthcare industry can gain. With new technologies like POE LiFi, VLC, the lighting to smart city lighting, smart mall or retail lighting, and so on, and also collaboration with IT sectors, data and technology share and transfer, etc. Being the 2nd most crowded nation & 5th main electricity consumer, India has been seeing a wide electricity supply-demand gap. A considerable share of the world’s total electricity generation is consumed for illumination by lighting sources and systems alone. The ingesting is continuing to rise owing to the rise of new zones of applications like entertainment lighting, aqua tissue culture, etc.

An increase in demand for LED lighting in India is observed mostly in metro cities, due to better consumer awareness and higher living standards. However, demand from other cities is forecast to grow based on the requirements from the factory lighting and street lighting domains. The government has also introduced the Rural Electrification Scheme under the Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana to achieve 100% electrification of all the villages, thereby boosting the adoption of LED lighting products.

Recent Development

COVID-19 Impacts:

Like many other industries in India, the lighting industry is also affected by COVID-19 as the supplies of electronic elements are hit due to a shutdown in many foreign countries. The market has measured a negative growth in the pandemic situation and a downfall in total market value. However, the growth momentum is likely to recover speedily. The COVID-19 impact has been observed at the first or starting node of the market value chain, i.e., lighting products manufacturers. Additionally, the market is witnessing a halting of production and disruption in the supply chain, leading to weakened industrial output growth and the decline of light manufacturing output across significant manufacturing hubs.
