New report BRIC B2C E-Commerce Markets 2017 tells of continued growth in the online retail markets of China, India, Russia and Brazil. The report cites a forecast that by the middle of the   next decade, the combined retail E-Commerce sales in these four countries will total over 2 trillion US dollars thanks to increased connectivity to the Internet and growing online shopper penetration.

The undisputed leader of this four-nation group is China. Even though the Internet connectivity percentage is lower in China than in some other nations in the group, the connected population has an affinity to online shopping, as nearly two thirds of Internet users made online purchases last year, according to sources cited in report.  M-Commerce also propels the growth of online retail in China as shoppers connect to popular sites such as Tmall and JD.com through mobile apps.

While mobile shopping is also growing in popularity in Russia, M-Commerce there contributes just a low two-digit portion to total online retail sales, as cited in the publication.  Cross-border shopping, particularly from China’s Aliexpress.com, is the defining trend in Russian E-Commerce. Young people lead in online shopping in Russia, as over 50% of online purchasers are under 35 years old.

India’s improving Internet penetration and movement to payment methods other than cash on delivery contribute to the nation’s rapid expansion of B2C E-Commerce. It is even forecast to surpass the online retail sales of the USA to take second place globally within the next 17 years, according to some sources cited in the publication. 

Brazil is expected to maintain its fourth rank in the BRIC group through the next decade, despite the continued growth of B2C E-Commerce. The expansion of online retail in Brazil is led by increasing smartphone penetration and mobile shopping, as shoppers appreciate the convenience of mobile device use. Long or uncertain delivery time and perceived high delivery fees are among the deterrents to the growth of online retail in Brazil, per this report.
