Executive Summary

  • The HIDA laboratory test-volume-weighted utilization index shows moderate expansion in Q1 2017. The index value grew in Q1 by 17.6 points to 43.1.
  • Index shifts reflect seasonal increases in test volumes. These increases were also seen in Q1 index values from previous years.
  • Geographically, five of six measured regions showed index increases comparable to the national average. The Southwest region was the only region to show index decreases, falling 22.5 points to -9.6.  This negative index value reflects slight contraction in the region.
  • Facilities of all sizes follow national trends, with seasonal increases in Q1. Larger facilities also saw an index increase in Q4 of 2016.
