Market Insights

Indonesia being the largest economy in South East Asia, has made remarkable social, economic, and political achievements in its 7 decades of independence. The country’s economy has grown five-fold since the mid-1980s. With around 31% of the land put to agricultural use, it is expected that the agricultural growth is likely to increase during the upcoming years.

In Indonesia, majority of breeding experiments for crops are conducted by Government Institutions under the Ministry of Agriculture (Agency for Research and Development/AARD), Ministry of Education (Universities), Ministry of Research and Technology (BATAN, LIPI, BPPT), Ministry of BUMN (Sang Hyang Sri, Pertani), private companies (Syngenta, BISI, Dupont, East West, Bayer, etc), Indonesia Seed Association, provinces (for land races) and by farmers. Ministry of Agriculture through Directorate of food, Directorate of Horticulture, Center for Plant protection, Center for plant Quarantine administers regulates the variety released, plant variety protection, plant quarantine. Whereas, Province Agriculture Offices manage and control seed certification, seed distribution and seed control. Seeds are categorized as nuclear seed, breeder seed (BS), Foundation Seed (FS) and Stock Seed (SS).

MNCs, such as Monsanto’s involvement in the World Economic Forum Partnership for Indonesia Sustainable Agriculture ensures that the farmers are provided with post-harvest assistance and guaranteed maize grain procurement. Furthermore, East-West Seed’s resilience in collaboration with the Dutch development organization, Cordaid, in a livelihood project is improving the access of seeds to the farmers.

Some of the important seed companies in Indonesia include PT Bisi Indonesia, PT DuPont Indonesia, East West Seeds Indonesia, Syngenta, Monsanto, etc.
