A lot of missions are required to be carried in today’s world which requires heavy lift operations which a normal twin engine helicopter cannot manage. Indeed a heavy lift cargo plane can easily take in that amount of weight but then the payload would have to be transported to the runway which is sometimes not possible because of rugged or inhospitable terrain or if the payload is too heavy to be moved like for example a helicopter may be stranded like when it happened in Afghanistan when a mi 26 lifted the Chinook heavy lift helicopter which has a loaded weight of 12,100 Kilograms.

A Heavy Lift or Large Aircraft is one which has at least 12,600 Pounds as maximum takeoff weight. The Heavy Lift Helicopter or the Flying crane as used in civil parlance is a very useful and necessary product whose has no substitute except maybe the tilt rotor aircraft when that attains widespread use. Heavy Lift Helicopters are used for military purposes such as transporting troops, equipment, civilian cargo, and passenger helicopters and as heavy cranes used to lift targets which can’t be lifted by regular cranes because of high weight or inaccessibility. Although bigger is not always better as certain limitations with the biggest production helicopter in the world Mil Mi 26 has shown, but still heavy lift helicopters are surely here to stay and as trends show even heavier lift helicopters might be produced in the future.

With a population of 4.2 Billion, Asia Pacific is the biggest market in the world by population and soon if the growth trends hold will become the most powerful region economically and politically in the future, with china as the largest economy of the world and India as the potential second largest economy in the world. Defence budgets of Asia Pacific countries are expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.97% until 2020 and Indonesia will be the fastest growing market with annual growth rates averaging 13.2% a year up until 2020. Currently a major problem with this region is rugged terrain and poor road connectivity. Thus cargo fixed wing aircraft cannot be used effectively, so the only option is the heavy lift helicopters. A heavy lift helicopter can land on a short runway or smooth terrain with ease. Hence Heavy Lift helicopter is perfectly suited for the Asia Pacific countries and helps them achieve their goals both civilian and military.
