Grease is a semi-solid lubricant, which can be segmented into industrial and automotive greases. It is a mixture of a fluid lubricant (usually petroleum oil) and a thickener (soap) dispersed in the oil. The base oil or lubricant (petroleum oil) can be changed using the pre-used lubricant. Thickeners also play an important role in the mixture. Soap thickener is the product of a reaction between metallic hydroxide or an alkali with a fat/fatty acid or ester. The three type of soaps used in this production are calcium soap, aluminum soap and sodium soap. Sodium soaps are stable at high temperatures and lithium soaps are stable at both heat and moisture conditions.
Grease, owing to its water-resistant property, is used in various applications and is extremely important for the smooth functioning of machines. The ability to maintain contact with the moving surface and lubricate it without leaking out under gravity, centrifugal action or even be squeezed out under pressure is the grease’s key feature. Grease can retain its properties under all temperatures during use. Grease seals out contaminants, suspends solid additives easily, reduces noise, and is suitable for intermittent operations. The greased machinery consumes less power and reduces wear and tear significantly. Food and beverages, paper, automotive, cement, mining, power, pharmaceuticals and steel processing are the industry segments taken into consideration in this market report.
The European market is primarily driven by the development of advanced greases for high-end applications. On the flipside, factors like shifting focus of the European automobile industry toward electric vehicles are likely to hamper the market growth. Factors like the recovery of the European construction industry are estimated to open up opportunities for the European market.
By base oils, the European market has been segmented into mineral oils, synthetic oils, semi-synthetic oils and bio-based oils, and by thickeners, into metal soaps (lithium, calcium, aluminum, sodium and others), clay, polyuria, silica and others. By the end-user industry, the European market has been segmented into automotive, mining, general manufacturing, construction (including heavy equipment and steel), transportation, food and beverage, energy and power and pharmaceutical applications.
By geography, the European market has been broadly segmented into Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain and Rest of Europe. In 2016, Germany was one of the major consumer of grease in Europe, primarily owing to the growing construction industry and rapid automotive demand.
Some of the major grease producers are Royal Dutch Shell PLC, Exxon Mobil, FUCHS Petrolub SE, Castrol, SKF Lubricant Company and Dow Corning Ltd
