The global meta-xylene market was valued at USD XX million and XX kilotons in terms of revenue and volume, respectively, in 2016 and is projected to register an estimated CAGR of XX% (revenue) and XX% (volume), during 2017-2022 (the forecast period). The demand for meta-xylene is driven by its use during the production of isophthalic acid (IA) that is used heavily in the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

A majority of meta-xylene (MX) produced, at the global level, is used during the manufacture of isophthalic acid (IA) that is used to alter the properties of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), making PET more suitable for the manufacture of soft drinks bottles.

A major part of meta-xylene is isomerized to para and ortho-xylene, due to the higher value of the latter. It is also used as a raw material in the production of 2, 4- and 2, 6-xylidine, as well as a range of smaller-volume chemicals. Additionally, meta-xylene is also used as a solvent in paints & coatings to some extent.

The growing polymer and plastics industries are expected to drive the demand for meta-xylene, during 2017-2022 (the forecast period). Moreover, the growing demand for pure isophthalic acid, (PIA) at around 5% per annum, is expected to drive the production of m-Xylene. This forms the basis for market segmentation into product and application of m-Xylene. However, m-Xylene, when consumed or inhaled, becomes harmful and can even cause death. Also, its high flammable nature makes m-Xylene difficult to handle. Of all Xylene isomers, p-xylene is the most valuable. The ratio of isomers can be shifted to favor p-xylene. This may act as a major roadblock for the growth of meta-xylene in the future.

Areas with Scope for Meta-xylene

The Asian market, with its growing demand for polyesters and the corresponding growth in the polyester industry, is solidifying its position as the center for the meta-xylenes market. There is a considerable intraregional trade within Asia, as Japan and South Korea are the major exporters and China is a major importer. China is the leading consumer of meta-xylene and will continue to be, despite substantial added capacity in the country. The largest meta-xylene producing regions, as per 2016 installed capacity, include Asia, followed by North America. US exports are expected to diminish while Middle Eastern and Indian exports are expected to increase.

  • South Korea’s Lotte Chemical Corp. invested KRW 367.5 billion won (USD 3.2 million) to ramp up its meta-xylene and polycarbonate production capacity.
  • Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc resumed the operation of a line of meta-xylene (MX) production equipment in Mar 2017. The production capacity increased to 220 form 150 kiloton per year.
  • Compañía Española de Petróleos S.A.U (Cepsa) will construct its second meta-xylene unit for exclusive supply to Indorama Ventures Public Ltd The new Sorbex unit, a near replication of the existing unit, will have a capacity up to 70 kiloton per year.
