The demand for ferric chloride is driven by the demand from wastewater treatment plants for its use as the coagulant due to its high efficiency and effectiveness in clarification, and utility as a sludge dewatering agent.

Ferric chloride is an industrial scale commodity chemical compound with the formula FeCl3 and with iron in the +3 oxidation state. It is produced industrially, by a reaction of dry chlorine with scrap iron (direct chlorination), at high temperatures. It is also a by-product of some metallurgical and chemical processes, such as, the chlorinating decomposition of iron-bearing oxide ores. Its ready availability and cheap feedstock, have made iron (III) chloride solution, a widely used raw material in the water treatment industry. Ferric chloride is used in wastewater treatment facilities to precipitate phosphorus and then removing it from the system.

Major restraint for ferric chloride market is stringent regulations imposed on companies by their respective governments during the manufacturing and shipment of ferric chloride and its dispersion into plastic or glass containers. Non-compliance with these regulations leads to substantial penalties and cancellation of the license.

Apart from high demand of ferric chloride in wastewater treatment plant, another major driver for this market is strict norms and policies imposed by various governments for treatment of sewage water and industrial waste to curtail pollution, like reduction in concentration of phosphorus from 1.0 ppm to 0.1 ppm. This has led to increase in consumption of ferric chloride. The global ferric chloride market is segmented on the basis of application into water and wastewater treatment, printed circuit boards, and others, which consists of pigment manufacturing, catalyst etc., where market is heavily dominated by its application in wastewater treatment.

Areas with Scope for Ferric Chloride:

Asia-Pacific accounted for the largest market size in terms of consumption followed by Europe and North America respectively for ferric chloride. With increasing industrial activities in Asia-Pacific region, the demand for ferric chloride is also expected to grow. While the demand in Europe, is also projected to witness high growth on account of strict regulations implied by the EU legislation on wastewater treatment. In North America, the United States is the largest market for ferric chloride followed by Mexico and Canada. This high demand for ferric chloride comes from the growing demand for sewage and industrial wastewater treatment application in this region.

Notable Developments in the Market
  • In 2016, Rosewild Trade Invest Ltd acquired an additional 31.8% shares in Chlor-Alkali Holdings Ltd leading to total 81.7% control of the company.
