Ferric chloride is an industrial scale commodity chemical compound with the formula FeCl3 and with iron in the +3 oxidation state. It is produced industrially, by a reaction of dry chlorine with scrap iron (direct chlorination), at high temperatures. It is also a by-product of some metallurgical and chemical processes, such as, the chlorinating decomposition of iron-bearing oxide ores. Its ready availability and cheap feedstock, have made iron (III) chloride solution, a widely used raw material in the water treatment industry. Ferric chloride is used in wastewater treatment facilities to precipitate phosphorus and then removing it from the system.
