The airport security has been a major concern, since decades, owing to the vulnerability of commercial aircraft to hijacking. Although hijackings have been reported since the 1930s, the emphasis on safety has increased drastically since 2001, which has jolted the world into imposing stricter regulations.

Ban on Carrying Electronic Devices - the United States and the United Kingdom

With the incorporation of advanced technologies in devices, such as screening & handling systems, information display solutions, emergency services, and terminal expansion, the safety concerns have accelerated the use of advanced airport technologies, in several airports, across the globe.

ISIS and other terrorist organizations have started using electronic devices like laptops, to plant explosives in airports. The screening systems used by airport authority find it difficult in identifying the explosives in these devices. The United States and the United Kingdom have banned people travelling from the Middle East and North Africa from carrying laptops and other electronic devices to these countries. The US ban would affect about 50 flights flying from major destinations in the Middle East, such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Kuwait, Casablanca and Istanbul. The UK restriction would affect airline services from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. Germany and France are two other countries who are planning to implement the ban in near future. The initiative taken by the government is expected to accelerate the growth of advanced airport technologies market, during the forecast period.

Smart Tower Technology - Singapore Changi Airport

With a passenger traffic of appropriately more than 58 million in 2015, Changi Airport in Singapore is one of the largest transportation hubs in Asia. The airport is government-owned and stands as a hub for several airline services providers, which include Singapore Airlines and Singapore Airlines Cargo, Tigerair, Jetstar Asia Airways, Scoot and SilkAir. The airport has three terminals and recently, the Government of Singapore has planned to construct two new terminals, one by the end of 2017 and the other by 2020. With the increasing passenger and aircraft traffic in the airport, the air traffic controllers have decided to watch and guide the landing and taking-off aircraft from a control tower.

In 2017, Changi Airport has installed a smart tower, equipped with the display technology. This technology has enabled air traffic controllers to guide the aircraft from a windowless room. Changi is the first airport to install this technology. These smart tower technologies help in managing air traffic in a better way, thereby, reducing the delay for passengers, reducing fuel consumption in airlines and boosting the demand for advanced airport technologies.
