The submarine markets is expected to reach USD XX billion by 2022, at a CAGR of 4.86% during the forecast period, with North America expected to constitute 33% of the market, followed by Asia-Pacific.

Submarines form the core part of naval fleets due to their multi-operation capability. The submarine market dropped drastically by the end of cold war. However, the BRIC nations and developing economies of Asia-Pacific have started enhancing their naval capabilities and are making investments in the submarine market.

Regional rivalry among India and Pakistan, and China and Japan has triggered the demand for submarines. However, the United States is the highest spender in the submarine market, followed by Asia-Pacific, despite declining defense budgets.

Global Submarine Market Revenue, by Region (in USD billion), 2016

North America is observed to be a matured market for submarines, with the United States dominating the market. The US Navy is now focusing more on anti-submarine warfare (ASW) with a combination of air, sea and undersea forces. The US military wants to ensure the safety of its Navy’s surface fleet by making sure its service’s attack submarine (such as SSN) force remains dominant in the undersea realm. At present, the US Navy has a total of 52 attack submarines. However, even with 52 boats, the Navy is struggling to meet the demands in the North Atlantic, and the Pacific oceans, as the Russian and Chinese fleets have increased their activities.

Fleet Replacement Programs

The average lifespan of a submarine is around 35 to 40 years, but usage beyond this time can lead to high risks and increased maintenance expenses. The replacement of old subs with new ones gives multiple advantages like high performance, reliability and efficiency. This is also considered a cost-effective measure for governments in the long run. Therefore, several countries have undertaken submarine development and procurement projects to replace the old ones so that they remain on par with their adversaries in military capabilities. The US and Australian governments have launched submarine fleet replacement programs in this regard.

The Ohio Replacement Program for submarine replacement in the United States outlines the replacement of existing Ohio-class ballistic submarines with new Columbia-class submarines. Meanwhile, China and India are trying to catch up as they modernize their fleets and equip with new submarines, while Russia has been sending mixed signals as it fluctuates between building new submarines and reverting to being a land power.

Recent News:

In July, BAE announced a USD 4.6 million award from DARPA to build an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) to accompany manned submarines, helping them spot targets by sending out active sonar pulses. The sonar drone could give submarines a new advantage at a time when Russia and China are copying the old ones. It still needs to be seen as to the manner in which BAE will accomplish this task, as the drone has to be small enough for being launched through a torpedo tube, while also carrying sufficiently high-powered sonar transmitter and have a data link to the submarine for maneuvering, and a large power source for powering the propulsions and the electronic systems.
