About Submarine Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) Systems

Air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems are any marine propulsion technologies that enable a non-nuclear submarine to operate without access to atmospheric oxygen, thus eliminating the need for surfacing or snorkeling. Most AIP systems generate electricity, which, in turn, drives an electric motor for propulsion or recharges the submarine’s batteries. Apart from assisting in propulsion, the AIP system on board the submarine can also be used as a backup to supplement the immediate power requirements for the on-board electrical and electronic equipment during an emergency.

According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is Enhancement in underwater endurance of non-nuclear submarines. While a non-nuclear submarine is submerged underwater, it uses the on-board batteries to power its propulsion systems and other on-board electrical systems. The average endurance of these batteries lasts for a week, after which the batteries need to be recharged by running its engines. To run the engines, the submarine requires contact with the surface atmosphere to intake fresh air and to vent out engine exhaust. This is done by snorkeling, where the submarine positions itself just below the surface of the water and exposes its air intake and exhaust systems to the atmosphere above the surface of the water.

Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is Engineering challenges in existing fuel cell technologies. Batteries produce electrical energy because of chemical reactions between the electrodes and the electrolyte. Once the reactants deplete, the battery stops delivering power and needs to be recharged using electrical energy from external sources. In contrast, fuel cells generate electrical energy through electrode reactions and the reactants are not stored in the cells. Therefore, fuel cells can continue to provide power output, if the supply of the fuel and oxidant is maintained. This was considered a huge advantage over the conventional battery technology, but the engineering challenges in designing, developing, and maintaining a fuel cell are posing many difficulties for the implementation of the fuel cell technology.
