Dubbed as the next big thing in the automotive industry, adaptive steering solutions failed to live up to the hype generated in the early part of this millennium. Launched in 2003, BMW’s adaptive steering solution was supposed to be a game changer. With subsequent launches by other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), namely with rear wheel steering (RWS) and all-wheel steering (AWS), the market failed to gain sufficient traction. However, since late 2015 and early 2016, adaptive steering solutions are making a comeback of sorts. OEMs such as Renault and Honda, to name a few, have re-entered the adaptive steering market with adaptive rear wheel steering. Other manufacturers such as Audi, Cadillac CT6, Porsche, and Ferrari have started offering some form of adaptive rear-wheel steering.

Ford started to roll out adaptive front steering in some of its top-selling models across Europe and North America. Despite the recent positivity in the adaptive steering market, a few challenges still exist. One of the major challenges of the adaptive steering market is the fact that at least 2 of the 3 types of adaptive steering solutions will cease to exist in future due to developments in steer-by-wire and the impending roll out of level 4 autonomous driving, which keeps the driver out of the loop.
