About Active Protection System (APS)

Active protection systems (APS) is a technology that integrates radars, sensors, fire control technology, and interceptors to detect, target, and negate incoming enemy fire. For decades, armored tanks and combat vehicles were the only sources of protection for the crew and vehicle against shells, rockets, and anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM). However, with the rising developments in the field of anti-tank weapons, the need to develop systems that can actively detect, identify, track, and shoot down these missiles has led to the development of active protection systems (APS).

The analysts forecast the global active protection system (APS) market to grow at a CAGR of 6.29% during the period 2017-2021.

New Report Released: - Global Active Protection System (APS) Market 2017-2021

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global active protection system (APS) market: General Dynamics, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Raytheon, Rheinmetall, and Saab.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: ASELSAN, Israel Military Industries (IMI) Systems, and NORINCOGROUP.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One trend in the market is development of modular APS. Modular APS aim to incorporate capabilities that will be functional even against future missiles. Hence, the vision for modular APS is to develop a suite of plug-and-play systems that will be able to adapt to the different threats as well as different army vehicles.”

According to the report, one driver in the market is development of aircraft APS. With the proven success of APS for ground vehicles, OEMs are now focusing on developing APS for fixed and rotary-wing aircraft. Helicopters, which usually hover at low altitudes, are highly vulnerable to damage from man portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) or shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles. To counter such damage, Orbital ATK unveiled its first Helicopter Active Protection Systems (HAPS) in 2015 at a Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC). The APS can identify an incoming threat and launch and guide a Kill Vehicle to the precise location to detonate the warhead at a point where the RPG is rendered ineffective.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is limited number of suppliers. The substantial technical skill set required for the development of APS is one of the major concerns in the industry, and not many countries or defense equipment manufacturing firms possess this capability. Though there is a need for APS, the limited number of suppliers and the high cost of APS limit the procurement and growth of the global APS market. The US, which is one of the most advanced and largest military spending nation in the world, does not have an APS of its own and its APS are still under in their development phase.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
