Herminium L. is a widely distributed genus, consisting of 49 species and ranging from Europe through most of continental Asia. Many species are subalpine or alpine, growing fully exposed in high mountain valleys and meadows or on peaty soil in moraine areas.

Herminium pugioniforme appears to reach the highest elevation of any orchid, said to occur up to 5500 m. Most species of Herminium have quite small, greenish, whitish or yellowish flowers arranged in racemes. A comprehensive taxonomic revision of Herminium were present based on field observations and morphological studies. One new species, Herminium tibeticum, were described from Tibet. Lectotypes for five species were designated and four taxa were reduced to synonymy.
