This study presents a new generic system for the pantropical Caesalpinia group (Caesalpinioideae, Leguminosae), a clade comprising 26 genera and ca. 205 species. Members of the group include trees, shrubs, lianas and some herbs. Results from a new, densely sampled, and largely well-resolved phylogeny demonstrated that the group as previously circumscribed needed to be revised. A number of previously recognized genera are shown to be non-monophyletic, with species from these groups segregating into several distinct clades that merit recognition at the rank of genus. The phylogenetic analyses clearly revealed three species that do not belong in any of the main clades, and these are recognised as the new monospecific genera: Hererolandia, Hultholia and Paubrasilia.

A fourth new genus, Gelrebia from Africa, is also described. In addition, two previously described genera, Denisophytum and Biancaea are reinstated, and a number of other genera are either expanded or contracted in species number and given emended descriptions. An identification key to genera is provided, as well as generic descriptions, line drawings and photographic plates for each genus and 75 taxa are given a new generic placement and the appropriate new nomenclatural combinations.
