According to the report, one driver in the market is increase in the demand for energy-efficient servers. Earlier, servers used to consume around 50-80 watts, but the average power consumed by the servers currently is 350 watts. This shows that servers consume around 30% of the total power consumption of data centers. The power consumption depends on the server type and its configuration. Power consumption is a very important factor when it comes to the OPEX of data centers, globally. Virtualization and the use of microservers help increase the utilization of server infrastructure in modern data center environments where the number of ideal servers is decreasing rapidly.

Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is short life span of servers. The life cycle of servers in data centers varies depending on their use. Enterprises are required to upgrade their servers based on the workload. Modern servers have processors with new extensions, new memory types, aggressive power throttling, and advanced thermal management. The workload performance of servers degrades over time because of the application updates and patches. This also includes modern workload deployment, which requires chipset features that are not available in the existing configuration, resulting in poor performance.
